Make your own fun Wow Wow Wubbzy birthday cake

A few years ago Julia was way into Wow Wow Wubbzy, she thought he was cute and had a funny voice and whatever else kids like about cartoons (her love faded for a year but now she’s BACK into him).

ANYWAY, did I mention that the year she was into Wow Wow Wubbzy I made her a Wow Wow Wubbzy cake for her birthday? Julia’s mom was making the arrangements and put me in charge of the cake. Since hand-made cakes are ALWAYS better than buying a rectangular cake with dumb crap airbrushed onto it and plastic soccer balls jammed into it, I decided to try and do it myself.

You might be saying “Damn, How do I make a Wow Wow Wubbzy birthday cake?”. Well, here’s what I discovered: making super-colorful character birthday cakes is easy.

Frosting

Figure out what you want to make and think about your colors. To make whatever color frosting you want you need a lot of plain white frosting and REALLY potent, saturated food coloring (Williams-Sonoma?). Something like these work great.

Mix up your colors in appropriate amounts and put the more detailed colors that you need for edging (or what a bakery chef would call piping, I think) into a Ziploc® bag, squeeze it all down into the corner and bite the tip of the corner off to make it like a little pastry decorating bag thing. I had to do this for the face and small details.

Preparation

  • Find the character you want, through proper channels, as I did (don’t sue me). I printed out a party decoration thing off the nickjr.com/wow-wow-wubbzy/ site which I think they encourage.
  • Print it out on a big sheet or paper
  • Make some kind of platform on which the cake will be transported. You need to be on this thing from start to finish because I don’t think you can move a cake like this to another surface when it’s done. I made a polka-dotted background, printed it out, mounted it to thick cardboard and wrapped it in clear wrap.
  • Make 2 13×9 cakes, cool them, all that.
  • Cut out your image. Try and simplify where you can. I had to customize it a bit by cutting off the arms and tail and shortening them
  • Put it on your cake and carefully cut it out. The fingers here were a bitch to cut out. The cake kept ripping.
  • There will be a lot of leftover cake from the unused areas, chop it into squares and use the leftover frosting to make weird cupcakes.

Do it

  • Stir up the frosting a bunch, it makes it go on easier.
  • Frost very carefully. (For added punch I did black edges. I could’ve stuck with yellow all around but I thought the black made it a little better.) I’m sure there are great tools for frosting a cake, get some, I had a butter knife, it sucked.
  • You are going to get very messy.

Finish up

  • Clean up the base
  • Refrigerate the cake to harden the frosting back up.
  • Get out your real camera and take a nice photo

Take THAT, Duff.
